Abstract

his study aims to analyze the distribution and potential of silica sand in the northern part of Pulau Halang, Rokan Hilir Regency, Riau Province, by integrating remote sensing and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) methods. Initial identification was conducted using Sentinel-2A satellite imagery with a spatial resolution of 10 meters through the calculation of the Silica Index (SI) based on NIR and SWIR bands. The results show that SI values range from 0.2 to >0.6, with 0.125% classified as moderate, 73.61% as high, and 26.26% as very high potential. These findings indicate that most of the study area is dominated by silica-rich materials. Field validation was carried out through XRD analysis of three silica sand samples (S1, S2, and S3) collected from high and very high SI (Silica Index) zones. The XRD results indicate that all samples are dominated by quartz (SiO₂), characterized by a main diffraction peak at approximately 2θ 26.6°. Crystallite size calculation using the Scherrer equation shows that samples from very high SI (Silica Index) zones have an average crystallite size of approximately 62.9 nm, while samples from high SI (Silica Index) zones have a smaller crystallite size of about 35.9 nm. This result demonstrates a consistent relationship between Silica Index values and quartz crystallinity. The integration of remote sensing data and XRD analysis produces a validated silica sand potential map, indicating that coastal and alluvial areas in the northern part of Pulau Halang have high to very high potential for silica sand development.
