Abstract

PTPN IV Regional 3 Sei Garo plantation is a palm oil processing industry that produces crude oil, kernels and fiber. Worm screw press is a screw that functions as a loose fruit extraction. This study was conducted due to the breakage of the worm screw press which aims to analyze the cause of damage to the worm screw through observing the microstructure and composition of the material, knowing the maximum load and compressive strength that the worm screw material can withstand, then knowing the mechanical properties of the screw press (hardness and compressive strength). The methods used are Chemical Composition Test, Rockwell Hardness Test (HRC), Compression Test and Microstructure Test. The results of the composition test showed a percentage of C: 0.659% and found chromium: 1.17%. Then the microstructure test found a more dominant ferrite and pearlite structure. The average hardness test was 9.9 HRC, and a compressive strength of 505 MPa. Based on the test results, the worm screw is high carbon steel but the hardness of 9.9 HRC is quite low based on Archard's law, the lower the hardness, the greater the volume lost due to wear (pressure). Then, traces of welding were found in the fracture area and changes in the crosssection (protrusions) were found which resulted in stress concentration in the area of the former welding, this stress concentration caused the worm screw to break.
