Abstract
Well A-1 is a well located in the Persian Gulf with tight carbonate rock conditions that have experienced a pressure drop, thus requiring stimulation. This reservoir is also influenced by a water-drive mechanism with a relatively close oilwater contact; therefore, fracture length growth must be controlled to prevent fractures from reaching the oil-water contact, which risks triggering water breakthrough and increasing water cut. This study aims to analyze the effect of polymer retarders in PAD fluid and variations in acid type on the distribution of etched width and fracture conductivity during the acid fracturing process. The method used is simulation research with FracCADE software employing a controlled variables approach on the Well A-1 model, which is an offshore horizontal open-hole well with a reservoir temperature of 115°C, porosity of 0.15, permeability of approximately 2 mD, and a design fracture half-length limit of 150 ft. The variables tested included PAD without polymer, HPG, CMHPG, and HEC, as well as 15% HCl acid in the form of straight acid, gelled acid, and emulsified acid. The simulation results show that, among the PAD fluid variations, CMHPG is the most effective system, with an average etched width of 0.101 in, average conductivity of 1356 md.ft, and FcD of 8.3. Based on acid type, straight acid delivers the best performance with an Average Etched Width of 0.101 in, Average Conductivity of 1356 md.ft, and FcD of 8.3. Gelled acid also demonstrates high performance with an Average Etched Width of 0.085 in, Average Conductivity of 771 md.ft, and FcD of 4.6. Meanwhile, in the emulsified acid group, the best performance is achieved with an Average Etched Width of 0.059 in, Average Conductivity of 331 md.ft, and FcD of 2.0. The optimal design was achieved using a CMHPG-based PAD with a straight acid stage followed by an emulsified acid stage, resulting in an Average Etched Width of 0.167 in, Average Conductivity of 4661 md.ft, and FcD of 25.3.
