Abstract

Film is one of the forms of mass communication media that not only serves as entertainment but also as a means of conveying messages, values, and ideologies to the public. Through symbols, narratives, and visuals, films are able to represent social realities and construct meaning. This study aims to analyze how military values are represented in the film Sayap-Sayap Patah using John Fiske’s semiotic theory. The film was chosen because it portrays the struggles and sacrifices of security officers, which are rich in values of courage, discipline, and responsibility toward the nation. The method used is John Fiske’s model of semiotic analysis, which includes three levels of codes: the level of reality, representation, and ideology. Data were collected through observation of scenes, dialogues, and cinematic elements that depict military values. The results show that at the level of reality, military values are reflected through heroic actions, military attributes, and interactions among characters that highlight loyalty and bravery. At the representational level, cinematography techniques, lighting, and background music strengthen the image of officers as brave and self-sacrificing figures. At the ideological level, the film emphasizes that militarism is not only about physical strength but also about morality, devotion, and nationalism. This study is expected to contribute to media representation studies, particularly regarding the portrayal of heroism and military values in Indonesian cinema.
