Abstract

This research was motivated by the low science learning outcomes of fifth-grade students at SDN 001 Japura, which was attributed to the dominance of conventional learning methods. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of implementing the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on science learning outcomes, specifically regarding the human respiratory system. This study employed a quantitative approach with a Quasi-Experimental method and a Non-equivalent Control Group Design. The population consisted of all fifthgrade students at SDN 001 Japura, with a sample of 50 students divided into two groups: the experimental class (25 students) and the control class (25 students). The data collection instrument was an objective learning outcome test consisting of 25 items, all of which were validated (r>0.396) with a very high reliability coefficient (0.874). The results indicated a significant influence of the PBL model on student learning outcomes. This was evidenced by the Independent Sample TTest on the posttest data, which yielded a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, lower than the 0.05 significance level. The average posttest score for the experimental class reached 81.76, significantly higher than the control class, which only reached 58.40. Furthermore, the Paired Sample T-Test in the experimental class showed a significant improvement from pretest to posttest scores. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model is significantly effective in improving the science learning outcomes of fifth-grade students at SDN 001 Japura compared to conventional learning methods.
