Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of heating at temperatures of 650°C, 750°C, 850°C and 950°C on the characteristics of sensitization, hardness and corrosion resistance of 304 stainless steel. 304 steel is a material that is widely used because of its high corrosion resistance. However, heating at high temperatures can cause precipitation of chromium carbides (Cr23C6) at grain boundaries, which reduces the chromium content in that area and increases the risk of intergranular corrosion. The research method was carried out with a holding time of 60 minutes, followed by Rockwell C hardness testing, microstructure observation (metallography), and corrosion testing using HCl solution for 7 days. The results showed that as the temperature increased, the hardness value increased from 24.2 HRC to 38.2 HRC. However, this increase was accompanied by an increase in the corrosion rate from 4.27 mmpy to 8.51 mmpy, indicating the occurrence of sensitization. At a temperature of 950°C, the grain boundaries begin to fade, indicating temperature sensitization, potentially reducing the corrosion resistance of 304 steel.
