Abstract
The decline in reservoir pressure leads to a reduction in the natural lifting capability of oil to the surface. Therefore, the application of artificial lift is required to optimize production, one of which is the Electric Submersible Pump (ESP). The performance of an ESP is influenced by the number of stages, which determines the total head, efficiency, and operating point of the pump. Hence, the selection of the number of stages greatly affects artificial lift performance, especially in Well X of Field A, which is experiencing reservoir pressure decline. This study analyzes the effect of stage number variation on the performance of an IND1300-type ESP using PIPESIM simulation and MATLAB calculations. The stage variations evaluated were 109, 129, 147, 166, and 185 stages, with evaluation parameters including Total Dynamic Head (TDH), flow rate, and efficiency. The results show that increasing the number of stages increases TDH and flow rate; however, the increase is not linear due to a decrease in efficiency caused by increased pump length and internal friction losses. The highest efficiency of 54% was obtained at 109 stages, which is closest to the Best Efficiency Point (BEP). After 127 stages, efficiency decreases significantly, reaching 30% at 185 stages. Based on the sensitivity results, the optimal number of stages differs between system optimization and pump optimization. This difference indicates that MATLAB is more suitable for trend and sensitivity evaluation, while PIPESIM better represents actual field operating conditions, particularly at higher stage numbers.
