Abstract
One of the major operational problems in pipeline systems is the occurrence of high pressure, which can be caused by increased flow resistance, particularly due to congeal oil formation that reduces the effective internal diameter of the pipeline. This study aims to analyze the pressure profile and pressure gradient along the oil pipeline network from Field A to the Production Delivery Facility and to evaluate the impact of congeal conditions on flow performance using the PIPESIM simulator. This research employs a field-based case study approach with steadystate flow simulation. The pipeline network model was developed based on actual field data, including fluid properties, pipeline specifications, operating conditions, and elevation profiles. The analysis was conducted under four operational scenarios: new pipeline design (baseline), normal operating conditions, high pressure conditions due to congeal formation (history matching in May), and posttreatment conditions after congeal mitigation (history matching in September). The evaluation focuses on pressure distribution, pressure drop, and pressure gradient analysis to identify pipeline segments experiencing increased flow resistance. Simulation results indicate that congeal conditions significantly increase the maximum system pressure up to approximately ±330 psi and cause a substantial reduction in production flow rate. Pressure gradient analysis identifies critical pipeline segments at PKM 55.00 ML and PKM 9.25 ML, where the effective internal diameters were reduced to approximately 2.38 inches and 1.9 inches, respectively, resulting in sharp increases in pressure gradient. Following congeal mitigation treatment, pressure gradients in the critical segments decreased and the production flow rate improved to approximately 3,900–4,000 BOPD, although the system had not fully returned to normal operating conditions. These results demonstrate that pressure gradient analysis is more representative than maximum pressure alone in identifying localized flow disturbances. Therefore, this approach is recommended as an operational monitoring method for early detection of congeal formation and for supporting technical decision-making in pipeline system management.
