Abstract
Peat soil is not suitable for use as subgrade, so special treatment is required to improve the stability and bearing capacity of peat soil through stabilization. Labuh Baru Barat, Pekanbaru City, is an area with many settlements and is classified as a peatland area. This study will add palm kernel shell ash and cement as stabilizing materials to the unconfined compressive strength of peat soil. The purpose of this study is to determine the physical properties of peat soil, soil density values, and UCS values of stabilized soil. This research was conducted using quantitative methods, in this case laboratory testing. The testing methods used were the Proctor Standard and UCS Test to obtain density values in the form of maximum dry soil weight and unconfined compressive strength values of stabilized soil. The composition used was native soil mixed with palm kernel shell ash at 10%, 20%, and 30% of the dry weight of the soil, then the highest UCS value from the mixture of palm kernel shell ash was added with 2%, 4%, and 6% cement. The results of physical soil testing showed a moisture content of 258.797%, a specific gravity of 1.281, a sieve analysis retained on sieve No. 200 of 61.7%, a fiber content of 62.9%, and fell under the PT symbol in visual identification (ASTM D2488). The soil density value based on the Standard Proctor test shows that the density of the original soil in Labuh Baru Barat, Pekanbaru City, is 4,37 kN/m³. The UCS value of the original soil was 161.62 kN/m². The highest UCS value was obtained for soil mixed with 10% palm kernel shell ash, which was 92.07 kN/m². The highest UCS value was obtained for soil mixed with 10% palm kernel shell ash and 2% cement, which was 107.02 kN/m². Although the results were not as expected, the objectives of this study were achieved.
