Abstract

Fanaticism in football cannot be separated from the presence of its supporters. One of the supporter groups known for its strong fanaticism is Curva Nord 1955, a supporter group that backs PSPS Pekanbaru. During matches, supporters often display symbols that hold embedded meanings and messages. This study aims to explore how fanaticism is formed through the process of symbolic interaction among members of Curva Nord 1955. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through in-depth interviews, nonparticipant observation, and documentation. Informants were selected using a snowball sampling technique, consisting of three individuals who are categorized as highly fanatic members of Curva Nord 1955. This study applies Mead’s theory of symbolic interactionism, which highlights three fundamental concepts: Mind, Self, and Society. The findings reveal that: First, in the aspect of Mind, Curva Nord 1955 supporters are able to construct deep meanings toward various symbols such as group attributes, visual properties, expressive tools, chants/anthems, group values and norms, and shared rituals. Second, in the aspect of Self, the study finds that the supporters’ self-identity is formed through the internalization of symbolic meanings reinforced by interactions with other members. Third, in the aspect of Society, Curva Nord 1955 possesses a strong social structure that significantly influences the behavior of its members. Overall, symbolic interactionism is proven to be the primary mechanism that shapes, maintains, and reproduces the fanaticism of Curva Nord 1955.
