Abstract

This research aims to describe the communication patterns of the Kubu Tribe in their interactions with non-Kubu communities in Sanglap Village. The study focuses on three main patterns, namely verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and culture-based communication that shape the interaction process between the two groups. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that the Kubu Tribe‟s verbal communication tends to be simple, brief, and gradually develops as trust toward outsiders increases. Nonverbal communication serves as the primary medium during the early stages of interaction, expressed through gestures, facial expressions, silence, and physical distance. Meanwhile, culture-based communication reflects their cautious nature, the need for safety, and their assessment of the interlocutor‟s character before initiating verbal exchanges. The combination of these communication patterns forms a gradual interaction process, ranging from initial contact to the development of social relationships. Social interactions such as economic activities, repeated encounters, visits to local shops, and mutual respect further strengthen their communication. This research concludes that the communication patterns of the Kubu Tribe are inseparable from their cultural context and function as mechanisms of adaptation in building relationships with outsiders.
