Abstract

Sibling rivalry is a common phenomenon, especially among middle children who often feel they receive less attention than their older and younger siblings. This study aims to determine the characteristics of sibling rivalry among middle children in families. This study uses a quantitative descriptive method with a sample of 178 middle children selected through Snowball sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire using a sibling rivalry scale that measures aspects of conflict, jealousy, and frustration. The results showed that the majority of middle children experienced sibling rivalry in the low to moderate categories, with the highest percentages in the low (38.2%) and moderate (35.4%) categories. Analysis also revealed no significant differences in sibling rivalry based on gender and age, but significant differences were found based on the number of siblings and birth order within the family (p < 0.05). Middle children in the second position in the family tend to report higher levels of sibling rivalry. In addition to showing competition, some middle children also develop independence, flexibility, and the ability to act as mediators within the family. These findings emphasize the importance of fair parenting and open communication to prevent sibling competition from developing into prolonged psychosocial issues. Parents are advised to give proportional attention and affection to all children to create family harmony. This study is expected to serve as an evaluation tool for families, parents, and academics, as well as a foundation for further research on the psychosocial dynamics of middle children in the context of Indonesian families.
