Abstract

The development of digital technology and the increasing intensity of social media use have given rise to the phenomenon of doomscrolling, which is the tendency to excessively search for negative news and information through digital platforms. This behavior is thought to contribute to psychological distress, such as anxiety, stress, and feelings of helplessness, especially among Generation Z, who have a high level of exposure to online media. This study aims to determine the relationship between doomscrolling and psychological distress among Generation Z in Pekanbaru City. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational method. The research sample consisted of 400 Generation Z respondents obtained through purposive sampling. The instruments used consisted of the Doomscrolling Scale (DS) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS). Data analysis was performed using Pearson Product Moment correlation to test the relationship between the two variables. The results showed a significant positive relationship between doomscrolling and psychological distress. The correlation coefficient value obtained was r = 0.554, which is in the moderate relationship category. The significance test produced a value of p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that the higher the doomscrolling behavior, the higher the level of psychological distress experienced by Generation Z in Pekanbaru City.
