Abstract
sychological hardiness among individuals recovering from substance addiction is defined as the ability to rise, adapt, and regain functional life after a period of substance use. This capacity is not merely a matter of personal strength, but rather the result of emotional experiences, social relationships, and environmental dynamics that accompany the recovery process. This study aims to identify the factors that contribute to the development of psychological hardiness among individuals after completing a rehabilitation program, by exploring their subjective experiences, the meanings of change, and the role of their social environment. A qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach was employed, and data were collected through in-depth interviews with three participants who completed the rehabilitation program at Rumah Sarasehan. The findings show that psychological hardiness is formed as a response to various personal and social experiences, such as internal motivation for change, deep awareness of the consequences of addiction, and the ability to regulate emotions and manage stress. Family support, partner support, and support from the immediate environment emerged as the most influential external factors, providing a sense of acceptance, trust, and worthiness needed for self- reconstruction. Engagement in positive activities such as work, worship, and avoiding high-risk environments also strengthened participants’ ability to adapt and maintain their new lifestyle. The “Rumah Sarasehan” institution played a crucial role in building discipline and selfcontrol during the early stages of recovery; however, psychological maturity became more evident once participants returned to their families and communities. In this context, psychological hardiness is understood not only as the ability to endure adversity, but also as an ongoing process of rebuilding identity and restoring hope for a healthier future.
