Abstract

The issue of plastic waste has become a global problem that requires serious attention. Plastic that does not decompose in a short period has become one of the main causes of environmental pollution, both on land and in the oceans. Every year, the amount of plastic waste continues to increase along with population growth and human activities. Recycling is one way to reduce the amount of waste, one of which is through the melting process. Melting plastic waste can be done manually by heating the plastic in a container, but this method is inefficient and poses health risks. This research aims to design and build a plastic melting machine for the production of paving blocks as an alternative solution for plastic waste processing. This tool consists of several components such as a 2 HP drive motor with a speed of 2800 rpm, a WPX type 60 gearbox with a 1:10 ratio, an FCL coupling, a 22 mm shaft, a drum with a diameter of 57 cm and a height of 90 cm, as well as a combustion system with an coconat shell charcoal burner and a heat-resistant cement layer. Other components used include: pillow block bearings, angle iron, steel plates, thermometer, gate valve, and threaded rods. The design is carried out by considering the strength and safety of the tool's structure through technical calculations such as torque, shear stress on the shaft, frame strength, and bearing lifespan. The test results show that the device can operate optimally in melting LDPE and PP plastics within 30–45 minutes per batch. The melted material can be directly used for paving block production. No damage or leaks were found during operation, and all components were declared safe to use. Thus, this tool has proven to be effective, efficient, and safe for recycling plastic into paving blocks, and provides an innovative solution for reducing plastic waste in the community environment.
