Abstract

This study presents a numerical analysis of the effect of viscous dissipation on heat transfer in natural convection flow around a horizontal cylinder. The main focus of this research is to evaluate how variations in the Prandtl number (Pr) and Eckert number (Ec) influence temperature profiles, velocity profiles, and heat transfer efficiency under conditions where fluid friction causes thermal heating. The governing momentum and energy equations are transformed into non-dimensional form using similarity transformations and solved numerically using the Keller-box method, implemented in MATLAB. The results show that increasing the Prandtl number leads to thinner thermal boundary layers and significantly enhanced heat transfer rates. Conversely, higher Eckert numbers increase fluid temperature due to internal friction, affecting both the thermal and velocity boundary layer characteristics. The combination of these two parameters demonstrates that viscous dissipation plays a significant role in the heat transfer mechanism. These findings can serve as a reference for designing and optimizing thermal systems involving horizontal cylinders in natural convection environments.
