Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of viscous dissipation on the surface friction force (skin friction) in natural convection flow through a horizontal cylinder using a numerical approach. The basic equations used are the conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy which are simplified using similarity transformations and the stream function method. Furthermore, the system of ordinary differential equations is solved numerically using the third-order Keller Box method which is converted into a first-order system of equations. The independent variables analyzed are the Eckert number (Ec) with values of 0.10; 0.15; 0.20; and 0.25, while the Prandtl number (Pr) remains at 0.72. The results show that the greater the Eckert value, the value of the surface friction coefficient (Cf) also increases. The distribution of Cf shows an increasing pattern from the front side of the cylinder to reach its peak at around an angle of 105°, then decreases again to the rear side. This indicates that viscous dissipation has a significant influence in increasing the velocity gradient and shear stress on the cylinder surface. These results can be an important reference in the development of passive heat transfer systems involving horizontal cylinders.
