Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze the effect of mangrove wood piles as soil reinforcement on the bearing capacity of foundations and sloof moments in a threestory residential building on soft clay soil. The study is motivated by the low bearing capacity of soft soils, which can cause differential settlement and potential structural failure if not properly reinforced. The analysis showed that the total load transferred from the sloof to the piles is approximately 6.492 tons with a uniform load of about 1.298 tons/m. Using the static Mayerhof method, the allowable bearing capacity of a single pile was calculated at around 0.78 tons, while the group pile (block) configuration significantly increased the capacity to approximately 42.895 tons. Moment analysis indicated that the use of pile reinforcement reduced sloof moments by up to 433% compared to unreinforced conditions. Based on the results, mangrove wood piles are proven to be an effective soil reinforcement method to enhance foundation bearing capacity and reduce sloof moments. This technique is recommended as an economical alternative for multistory buildings on soft soils, with careful consideration of pile quality and group configuration design.
