Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of mangrove wood as a pile material in reinforcing the foundation soil of three-storey residential buildings. Tests were conducted on mangrove wood found in the Tembilahan area, Indra Giri Hilir Regency, Riau Province. The tests were conducted to determine the moisture content, specific gravity, parallel fibre compressive strength, and flexural strength to determine the suitability of mangrove wood as a reinforcement element. The test results showed that mangrove wood had an average moisture content of 15.08%, a density of 1074.27 Kg/m³, an actual specific gravity of 0.93%, a parallel fibre compressive strength of 40.08 MPa, and a bending strength of up to 10.2 MPa, and an elastic modulus that falls within the Fb E11 wood quality code based on the SNI 7973:2013 Wood Quality Table. Meanwhile, the average MOE value from the bending test reached 27,079.24 MPa, which falls within the >E25 quality class. There is a 67% difference between the Modulus of Elasticity based on specific gravity and the Modulus of Elasticity based on bending strength testing. This indicates that MOE estimation based on specific gravity provides a lower stiffness value than direct testing. Based on these mechanical parameters, the axial material bearing capacity of mangrove wood piles is 201.33 kN, far exceeding the load requirements of a three-storey residential building of 0.64 kN. Therefore, mangrove wood is declared to meet technical requirements and is suitable for use as piles in soft soil.
