Abstract
The background of this study was the rapid development of the Islamic financial sector in Indonesia, which was often not accompanied by adequate literacy levels among the public, particularly in rural areas. Many community members still equated Islamic banking with conventional systems and possessed limited understanding regarding the prohibition of riba and Islamic contracts. This condition positioned students of the Community Service Program (KKN) in the Islamic Banking Study Program as vital agents of change in bridging this information gap. The purpose of this research was to analyze and describe the roles carried out by students of the Islamic Banking Study Program at the Islamic University of Riau in socializing Islamic banking, as well as to identify community responses and the impacts of these socialization efforts in Siak Sri Indrapura Regency. The findings of this qualitative study, which employed in-depth interviews with community respondents, indicated that KKN students had effectively performed their roles as educators. They successfully simplified complex Islamic financial concepts, particularly regarding the differences between Islamic and conventional banks and the prohibition of riba, by using simple and relatable language. The success of this socialization activity was demonstrated by significant positive behavioral changes. All respondents stated that they were interested in using Islamic financial services after the socialization. Most respondents had also taken concrete actions, such as opening Islamic bank savings accounts (including for Hajj savings) or using Islamic financing facilities. The motivation for adoption was driven by two factors: religious awareness (a strong desire to avoid riba), supported by practical benefits (fewer administrative fees and smoother procedures).
