Abstract

The study was motivated by the low learning interest of some students at SMPN 4 Kampar Kiri, Riau, as reflected in inadequate and poorly maintained school facilities, less harmonious student-teacher relationships, and less positive social interactions among students. These conditions influenced students' learning comfort and active participation in class. The aim of the study were to describe the school environment, determine the level of students’ learning interest, and analyze the influence of the school environment on learning interest. This was a quantitative study with a correlational approach. The study population was all students, with a sample of 30 students selected by using purposive sampling. A questionnaire was used to measure the school environment and learning interest. The results of descriptive analysis indicated that the school environment was in the high category (average score of 59.00 out of a maximum score of 65) and the students’ learning interest was also high (average score of 43.93 out of 48). However, the results of simple linear regression showed that there was no significant influence of the school environment on learning interest (Sig. = 0.580 > 0.05). This finding confirmed that the students’ learning interest was influenced by factors other than the school environment. Therefore, the school was expected to consider other variables such as intrinsic motivation, family support, and learning methods to enhance learning interest optimally.
