Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between loneliness and the intensity of social media use among students at the Islamic University of Riau. The population of this study consists of students from the Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), with a total sample of 394 students selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using two scales: the Loneliness Scale and the Social Media Usage Scale, along with a scale measuring consumptive behavior. The data were analyzed using the non-parametric Spearman Rank correlation method. The results showed a correlation coefficient of 0.477 with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant positive relationship between loneliness and the intensity of social media use, as well as consumptive behavior, among students from the three faculties. This means that the higher the level of loneliness, the higher the intensity of social media use, and vice versa. The effective contribution of the social media usage variable to consumptive behavior was 0.447 or 9.5%.
