Abstract

The background of this research is based on the phenomenon that out-of-town students often experience difficulties in adapting to new environments, whether academically, socially, or emotionally. Independence is considered an important factor that can influence students’ ability to adjust. This study aims to determine the relationship between independence and adjustment among out-of-town students at the Islamic University of Riau. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The participants consisted of 100 out-of-town students selected using a simple random sampling technique. The instruments used were the Independence Scale adapted from Steinberg (2002) and the Adjustment Scale adapted from Baker & Siryk (1984). Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test with the aid of SPSS version 25 for Windows. The results showed a strong and significant positive relationship between independence and adjustment among out-of-town students, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.688 and a significance value of p = 0.000 (p < 0.05). This indicates that the higher the level of independence possessed by out-of-town students, the better their adjustment, and vice versa.
