Abstract
The phenomenon of female university students visiting nightclubs is commonly perceived negatively by society, as it is considered inconsistent with prevailing social norms and the idealized image of students. This perception generates stigma and labeling that become attached to the students, consequently affecting their identity and social positioning. This study aims to examine the motivations underlying female students’ visits to nightclubs, the forms of stigma and labeling that emerge, and their social and psychological impacts. Using a qualitative approach, this research is based on in-depth interviews with three female students (X, Y, and Z) as primary informants, supported by interviews with a youth leader, a religious figure, and members of the local community. The findings indicate that students’ motivations for visiting nightclubs are shaped by curiosity, peer influence, the need for entertainment, and as a means of escaping academic pressure and family-related problems. Such behavior subsequently gives rise to social labeling, which functions as a mechanism of social control employed by the community to encourage behavioral change in accordance with dominant norms. Analysis based on labeling theory shows that these labels emerge as social reactions, while social control theory explains that labeling operates as a form of external control aimed at directing individuals’ behavior toward social conformity. The impacts of this process are reflected in feelings of shame, insecurity, and subsequent behavioral adjustments. In conclusion, female students who visit nightclubs are not only perceived as engaging in deviant behavior, but also as subjects of social regulation, through which labeling operates as a mechanism of social control within society.
