Abstract

Environmental sanitation is an effort to create a healthy environment by controlling physical factors that can affect human health. In places of worship such as mosques, sanitation quality plays an essential role in ensuring the comfort and health of worshippers. This study was conducted at Ar-Rahman Paripurna Mosque in Pekanbaru City, which has been designated as a model mosque at the city level through Mayor’s Decree No. 854 of 2021. The aim of this research is to assess the environmental sanitation standards of the mosque using a descriptive approach through survey and field observation methods, along with interviews with mosque administrators and facility users. The research sample was selected purposively, focusing on Ar-Rahman Mosque. The variables studied include: (1) availability of clean water, (2) conditions of sanitation facilities (toilets and urinals), (3) wastewater management systems, (4) waste disposal systems, (5) air ventilation, (6) lighting, and (7) the physical condition of the building (floor, walls, roof, fence, and prayer equipment). Data collection instruments used a checklist based on the Ministry of Public Works Regulation No. 21 of 2021 and relevant Indonesian National Standards (SNI) on sanitation. The results show that the general condition of the mosque met the standards at 60%, building condition at 88.88%, and sanitation facilities at 72.72%. Deficiencies were found in aspects such as inadequate air ventilation, the absence of wastewater treatment systems, and lack of organic-inorganic waste separation. This research provides a reference for improving mosque sanitation quality, particularly for other Paripurna Mosques in Pekanbaru City to meet applicable environmental sanitation standards.
