Abstract

The formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) scale in oil and gas production systems can lead to reduced production efficiency and equipment damage. One of the commonly used methods to address this issue is the application of organicbased scale inhibitors. This study aims to analyze the effect of tannic acid concentration from mangosteen peel extract combined with grade 2 coconut shell liquid smoke on the reduction of CaCO₃ scale formation. The experiment was conducted using three concentrations of scale-forming solution: 1 M, 1.5 M, and 2 M, with inhibitor volumes of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 mL, and soaking times of 30 and 60 minutes. The results showed that the scale reduction efficiency was influenced by the concentration and volume of the inhibitor as well as the contact time. A concentration of 1 M yielded the highest reduction percentage of 25.53% at 30 minutes. Meanwhile, at a concentration of 2 M and a contact time of 60 minutes, the reduction percentage increased significantly to 19.84% at 25 mL volume, indicating the importance of sufficient contact time at higher concentrations. In conclusion, the combination of mangosteen peel extract and coconut shell liquid smoke has potential as an effective and environmentally friendly green scale inhibitor in preventing CaCO₃ formation, especially at optimal volume and contact time conditions.
