Abstract
Scale is a common problem that occurs in piping systems in the oil industry, such as in flowlines and production lines to gathering stations. Scale is formed from ionic compounds in air formations that crystallize and precipitate, causing pipe narrowing, fluid flow obstruction, increased pressure and temperature, and potential damage to the pipe. One of the most common types of scale is Calcium Carbonate (CaCO₃). To overcome this problem, scale inhibitors are used, both inorganic and organic, such as EDTA 2Na. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of tannin extract from ketapang leaves as a natural organic inhibitor in reducing CaCO₃ scale, and to compare it with EDTA 2Na as a conventional inhibitor. Tests were conducted with varying inhibitor volumes of 50 ml, 60 ml, and 70 ml and soaking times of 60, 90, and 120 minutes. The results showed that ketapang leaf extract provided optimum scale reduction at a volume of 60 ml and a soaking time of 90 minutes. However, EDTA 2Na consistently demonstrated higher effectiveness, even at lower concentrations. Nevertheless, ketapang leaf extract has potential as an environmentally friendly alternative inhibitor and can be further developed for industrial applications.
