Abstract

he formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) scale in oil and gas production pipeline systems can disrupt fluid flow and reduce operational efficiency. While synthetic inhibitors such as EDTA 2Na have proven to be effective, their use raises concerns regarding environmental impact. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of varying volumes and soaking times of two types of inhibitors—green tea leaf extract as a natural inhibitor and EDTA 2Na as a synthetic inhibitor—on the reduction of CaCO₃ scale, as well as to compare their effectiveness. The inhibitor volumes used were 10 ml and 15 ml, with soaking durations of 30 and 60 minutes. The results showed that increasing both volume and soaking time significantly affected scale reduction effectiveness. EDTA 2Na exhibited the highest reduction percentage, reaching 45.5% at a volume of 15 ml and a soaking time of 60 minutes, while green tea extract under the same conditions achieved only 8.5%. This indicates that EDTA 2Na has a higher scale-reducing capability; however, green tea extract still showed a consistent increase in effectiveness, suggesting its potential as an eco-friendly organic inhibitor alternative. The combination of 15 ml volume and 60 minutes of soaking time was found to be the most optimal parameter for both inhibitors. Further research is recommended to explore the active compounds in green tea extract and to evaluate its effectiveness under more complex operational conditions.
