Abstract
Hydraulic fracturing is a well stimulation method used to enhance hydrocarbon production in low-permeability formations. Proppant is a critical material in this process, as it functions to keep the fractures open, allowing fluid to flow. Quartz sand is one of the commonly used natural proppants. This study aims to evaluate the potential of quartz sand from Tibawan, Rokan Hulu Regency, as a proppant based on the API RP 19C standard by analyzing parameters such as roundness, sphericity, bulk density, crush resistance, turbidity, and acid solubility. Testing was conducted on both natural sand and sand modified with epoxy resin in variations of 6 grams, 9 grams, and 12 grams. The results indicate that natural Tibawan quartz sand does not meet the API RP 19C standards in terms of roundness (0.47), acid solubility (12%), and crush resistance (25.35%). However, after being modified with epoxy resin—especially with the 12-gram sample (T12)—there was a significant improvement in all tested parameters, including roundness (0.62), sphericity (0.85), bulk density (0.91 g/cm³), acid solubility (2%), crush resistance (3.74%), and turbidity (1 NTU). Therefore, Tibawan quartz sand has the potential to be developed as resin coated sand for proppant applications in hydraulic fracturing.
