Abstract

Scale formation on production pipes is a common problem in the oil and gas industry, the scale that is formed can inhibit the flow rate of fluid in the flowline, reduce the diameter of the pipe which can cause a decrease in production results, and cause damage to production equipment. Scale reduction is generally overcome using scale inhibitors consisting of organic acids and inorganic acids. Inorganic acids used in industry are generally hydrochloric acid (HCl). Inorganic acids are known to be less environmentally friendly so that currently scale inhibitors derived from organic materials are being developed. This study uses acetic acid (CH3COOH) from fermented coconut water which has the potential to reduce scale with a mixture of HCl to optimize the inhibitor in reducing scale, while the scale sample tested is CaCO3 scale. The method used in this study is the Weight loss method by calculating the weight lost during the scale sample reduction process. Variations in volume, soaking time, and HCl concentration were used in this study. In this study, volume variations of 10 ml, 20 ml, and 30 ml were used with time variations of 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 90 minutes and with HCl concentration variations of 5%, 10%, and 15%. In this study, the best scale reduction ability occurred at a volume of 30 ml with an HCl concentration of 15% at 90 minutes with a reduced scale of 1.74 grams from an initial weight of 3.00 grams with a reduced percentage of 58%.
