Abstract
Scale formation in production pipes is a common problem in the oil and gas industry. The presence of scale can inhibit fluid flow in tubing, wellheads, and flowlines, as well as cause narrowing of pipe diameters and damage to production equipment. One method of controlling scale is by injecting scale inhibitors. Based on their type, scale inhibitors are classified into inorganic and organic. The use of organic scale inhibitors is preferred due to their relatively low cost, high effectiveness, and more environmentally friendly compared to inorganic inhibitors. This study used a mixture of organic acids derived from mangosteen peel extract and grade 2 coconut shell liquid smoke, which contains acetic acid compounds. The inhibitor mixture was tested with two concentration variations, namely 5 mL and 15 mL, and five soaking time variations: 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 minutes, against three levels of calcium carbonate scale growth: 1 M, 1.5 M, and 2 M.The results showed that at a concentration of 5 ml and a scale concentration of 1 M, the best scale growth reduction reached 10.91% at a 60-minute immersion time. For a 15 ml concentration, the best reduction of 4.41% was also achieved at 60 minutes. At a 1.5 M scale concentration, the highest reductions of 2.68% for the 5 ml inhibitor and 2.34% for the 15 ml inhibitor occurred at 60 and 50 minutes, respectively.
