Abstract

Asphalt mixture, commonly known as asphalt concrete, is one of the flexible pavement constructions on the surface layer. The aggregate mixture consists of coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, and filler that are mixed, spread, and compacted in a hot state. Materials commonly used as filler in asphalt mixtures include stone ash, cement/pozzolan, lime, and fly ash. Fillers can be utilized from waste. Therefore, in this case, the researcher intends to utilize waste areca nut husks to be turned into ash as filler. This study aims to obtain the optimum asphalt content value and to determine the Marshall characteristics concerning the optimum asphalt content using areca nut husk ash filler with filler percentages of 0%, 50%, and 100% in the AC – WC mixture. The research results obtained the optimum asphalt content of 6.5% where the use of palm kernel ash filler in the AC - WC mixture with variations of 0%, 50%, and 100% resulted in Marshall test results, namely VMA, VFA, Flow, and Stability values for all filler contents used in this test meeting the requirements according to the 2018 Bina Marga Specifications. The addition of areca nut husk ash in the AC – WC asphalt mix increases the Marshall characteristic values in VFA, stability, and flow, but there is a decrease in flow value for 100% filler content. The more filler used, the lower the VMA value will be. The VIM value in the areca nut husk ash filler combinations only meets the requirements of the Bina Marga Specification 2018 for filler contents of 0% and 50%, while the VIM value at 100% filler content of 2.85% does not meet the criteria according to the Bina Marga Specification 2018, with a minimum limit set at 3%. The higher the amount of filler used, the lower the VIM value will be.
