Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the forms of difficulties faced by students in Arabic speaking skills (maharah al-kalam) and to identify the causal factors based on verifiable scientific literature studies. It employed a qualitative descriptive approach using a literature review method, examining both primary and secondary sources from scientific journals, textbooks, proceedings, and relevant theses or dissertations. The findings revealed that students’ difficulties in speaking Arabic included pronunciation errors, limited vocabulary, grammatical issues (related to nahwu and sharaf), lack of fluency, and low self-confidence. The underlying causes were both internal—such as anxiety, low motivation, and weak language mastery—and external, including non-communicative teaching methods, limited use of media, and an unsupportive campus environment for language practice. Furthermore, this study found that various solutions were proposed in the literature, such as implementing communicative task-based teaching strategies, using audiovisual media, increasing the intensity of both structured and spontaneous speaking exercises, and creating a supportive language environment. These findings support the need for a systematic transformation in Arabic language learning curricula in higher education, including curriculum development, lecturer training, and institutional policies. Therefore, this research contributes both theoretically and practically to the development of speaking skills, especially in the Arabic Language Education Study Program at Riau Islamic University and other similar institutions in Indonesia.
