Abstract

The global energy crisis and increasing awareness of the importance of environmental conservation have encouraged the use of alternative energy sources from renewable organic materials. One potential renewable energy is biogas, which can be produced from the fermentation of organic waste through an anaerobic process. This study aims to determine the profitability of pineapple peel, banana peel and vegetable waste as raw materials for the production of household-scale biogas. The method used is a laboratory experiment using a fixed dome type digester made of fiberglass with a capacity of 50 liters. The materials used consist of a mixture of organic waste (pineapple peel, banana peel, and vegetables), water, and two types of starters, namely EM4 and yeast, each with a certain composition. Observations were made on gas pressure, gas volume produced, retention time, and flame characteristics produced from biogas combustion. The results of the study showed that the use of yeast starter produced higher biogas volume and pressure compared to the use of Em4. In addition, the blue to reddish flame indicates a combustion process that still contains a little water, indicating that the biogas produced is of sufficient quality to be used as an alternative energy source to replace LPG at the household level. In conclusion, the use of pineapple peel, banana peel, and vegetable waste as raw materials for biogas not only has the potential to reduce environmental pollution, but also provides an economical and environmentally friendly energy solution
