Abstract

Rigid pavement in road construction requires high-quality concrete capable of withstanding traffic loads and ensuring long service life. One of the key factors in achieving this quality is the selection of cement type used in the concrete mix. PowerPro cement, classified as a High Early Strength (HE) type, offers higher early strength and is claimed to be more environmentally friendly compared to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), which is commonly used in construction. This study aims to determine the effect of using PowerPro and OPC cement on the slump value and flexural strength of concrete with a target compressive strength of Fc’ 45 MPa. The method employed is a laboratory experiment by casting beam specimens measuring 15 × 15 × 60 cm. Tests were conducted at the ages of 3, 7, and 28 days, including slump tests to assess workability and flexural strength tests to evaluate mechanical performance. The use of PowerPro is expected to accelerate strength gain and enhance the quality of rigid pavement. The planned slump value for this study was 6 ± 2 cm. The slump result for the OPC mix was 6 cm, meeting the planned range, while the PowerPro mix showed a slump of 5 cm. This indicates no significant difference in workability between the two types of cement. Flexural strength tests conducted at the PT Ria Mas Bersaudara laboratory showed that the OPC mix had average strengths of 29.89 kg/cm² at 3 days, 35.51 kg/cm² at 7 days, and 44.49 kg/cm² at 28 days, indicating normal strength development. In contrast, the PowerPro mix achieved average flexural strengths of 40.38 kg/cm² at 3 days, 44.49 kg/cm² at 7 days, and 38.96 kg/cm² at 28 days. These results suggest that PowerPro cement provides significantly higher early strength, but shows a decrease in strength at 28 days. This confirms the high early strength characteristic of PowerPro cement, although a reduction in quality occurs as the concrete matures.
