Abstract
An influencer is a third party who possesses a high level of popularity and does not necessarily come from among celebrities or public figures. Influencers on social media such as Instagram celebrities (selebgram), key opinion leaders, vloggers, or YouTubers are users of social media platforms who build their own fanbase or followers. This is exemplified in the film "Following", a South Korean production by Engine Film Inc., which was released on May 15, 2024, with a duration of 1 hour and 42 minutes. The film was directed by Kim Se-hwi and stars Byun Yo-han, Shin Hye-sun, and Lee El. The aim of this research is to explore how the hedonistic lifestyle of an influencer is represented in the film Following, using John Fiske’s semiotic analysis, which examines and represents signs based on three levels: the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. The method used in this research is a qualitative research method by applying John Fiske's semiotic model approach. The location of this research will be in Pekanbaru, specifically around the Faculty of Communication Science, Universitas Islam Riau, Pekanbaru. This research concludes, through John Fiske’s semiotic analysis, that the film Following presents elements of an influencer's hedonistic lifestyle, depicted in seven scenes focusing on that representation. At the Reality Level, Han Sora represents an individual whose life has largely been commodified and curated for public consumption. At the Representation Level, the film critically unveils the illusion constructed in these scenes. At the Ideological Level, Following can be seen as a critique of excessive hedonism and consumerism in modern society.
