Abstract
This study analyzes the coverage of Rohingya refugee rejection in Aceh as reported in the December 2023 editions of Tempo magazine, using Teun A. Van Dijk’s discourse analysis model, specifically focusing on the textual dimension, which includes macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. The research focuses on how Tempo frames this humanitarian issue through its text structure and journalistic style. The findings show that the two Tempo editions present a continuous narrative. The first edition emphasizes local community rejection and the reasons behind it, while the second adopts a more emotional and empathetic approach toward the refugees. Tempo demonstrates a tendency toward literary journalism, employing narrative techniques and metaphors to create emotional proximity with the reader. However, criticism toward the government or related institutions is minimal. Additionally, the Islamic identity aspect potentially significant in the context of solidarity is not explored in depth. Tempo highlights the humanitarian aspect more than its traditionally critical stance toward the state. These findings provide insight into how media influences public perception through representational strategies and framing choices in reporting refugee issues.
