Abstract
This study aims to explore the communication motives of Universitas Islam Riau students while playing Grand Theft Auto V Roleplay (GTA V RP), an online roleplaying game that simulates real-life experiences. The research adopts a qualitative approach utilizing a phenomenological method, involving five informants who are active students from various faculties. Data were collected through in-depth interviews to uncover their subjective experiences while engaging with the game. The findings are grounded in Alfred Schutz’s theory, which distinguishes between two types of motives: "because" motives (pastdriven factors such as curiosity, peer influence, and introverted tendencies) and "in order to" motives (future-oriented goals such as improving communication skills, expressing personal interests, and escaping academic pressure). Based on research findings regarding the motivations of students from Universitas Islam Riau in playing GTA V Roleplay, it can be concluded that their involvement in this gaming world is not solely driven by entertainment aspects, but rather has a complex and meaningful motivational background. In the context of Alfred Schutz's phenomenological theory, two main categories of motives were identified: the "in order to" motive and the "because" motive.
