Abstract

This study aims to explore the symbolic meanings of each piece of equipment used in the mandi taman ceremony in traditional Malay wedding customs in Bengkalis District. The background of this research arises from the fact that many people in Bengkalis carry out the mandi taman ritual without understanding the meaning of the items used in the process. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive qualitative approach, intended to describe the symbolic meanings of each item used in the mandi taman ceremony. The theoretical framework is based on semiotics, specifically the theory popularized by Roland Barthes. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this research indicate that each item used in the mandi taman ceremony holds its own symbolic significance, such as symbols of purification and sanctity, new beginnings and hope, marital bonds, loyalty and commitment, self-reflection, and harmony and serenity.
