Abstract
This study aims to describe the academic procrastination behavior of Mechanical Engineering students writing their theses at the Islamic University of Riau. Procrastination is the habit of delaying completion of tasks that can negatively impact students' academic achievement. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting data through interviews, observation, and documentation with two informants selected based on purposive sampling criteria. The results showed that both informants tended to delay their thesis work for reasons such as the influence of their peer group, laziness, anxiety, self-doubt, and dependence on mood. The aspects of procrastination that emerged included perceived time, intention-action gap, emotional distress, and perceived ability. Although both informants exhibited procrastination behavior, there were differences in the intensity and triggers. This behavior impacted the quality of their final assignments, graduation time, and students' mental health. These findings are expected to provide consideration for students and academics in managing their time and developing strategies to reduce the habit of procrastination in completing their theses.
