Abstract

Phobia of heights or acrophobia is an anxiety disorder that can have a significant impact on the daily life of the sufferer. Treatment is generally done through exposure therapy, but this method often takes a long time and requires the presence of a professional in person. As an innovative solution, this study developed a Virtual Reality (VR) - based Altitude phobia therapy application that allows users to undergo therapy independently. This app is designed to provide a realistic and gradual simulation experience, so that users can manage their fear more effectively. This study uses the Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC) method which consists of the stages of concept, design, material collection, assembly, testing, and distribution. Through this approach, applications are developed with good multimedia quality, effective interaction, and safe simulation experience in mind. This application is equipped with a use guide feature, an explanation of height phobia, as well as various levels of gradual therapy tailored to the user's anxiety level. Test results show that the app is able to provide a safe therapeutic experience and help users gradually reduce their fear of heights. Control and gesture testing shows that each feature performs as expected. In addition, the results of implementation through a questionnaire to 30 respondents showed that this application obtained a user satisfaction index of 87%, which indicates that the application is easy to use, convenient, and effective as a medium of self-therapy. With this application, it is expected that people with phobia of heights can obtain therapeutic solutions that are more accessible, practical, and effective, without having to rely on professional therapeutic services directly. This application also has the potential to be developed further as a therapeutic medium for other types of phobias.
