Abstract

One of the things that humans need to survive is food. In the production process, business actors or producers are often dishonest and commit fraud or deception to consumers. Among these frauds and deceptions is the use of hazardous chemicals which are added during the food manufacturing process as preservatives, dyes, gums, and others. Law Number 8 of 1999 concerning Consumer Protection is intended to be a strong legal basis for consumers and business actors regarding their rights and obligations, as well as a strong legal basis for the government and non-governmental consumer protection institutions to carry out efforts to empower consumers through coaching and consumer education. As for this research, there are main issues that will be discussed, namely, How is Consumer Legal Protection for Processed Foods Containing Hazardous Substances in Pekanbaru and secondly, How are BBPOM Efforts in Pekanbaru to Be Optimum in the Framework of Protecting the Community Against Processed Foods Containing Hazardous Substances in Pekanbaru City . This legal research is a type of empirical research. This method is used to solve problems by conducting research on primary data in the field. This research was conducted in Pekanbaru City and the Pekanbaru POM Center. The results of the research that the authors obtained are: Protection for Pekanbaru Consumers is still not running as it should, where there are still many consumers who are harmed by the circulation of processed food containing hazardous ingredients. And the uneven socialization carried out by the government to consumers in Pekanbaru City has resulted in minimal consumer knowledge regarding processed food containing hazardous ingredients. The efforts made by the Balai Besar POM in Pekanbaru in this regard are still not optimal. Balai Besar POM has taken action to prevent the distribution of food containing hazardous materials, carrying out routine operations to traditional markets, modern markets, Ramadan markets but in the field there are still foods containing hazardous materials.
