Abstract

Roads as facilities and infrastructure are needed to support the economy of a region. In some areas exposed to sea water, road construction has problems, such as the Bengkalis Ring Road. As a result of exposure to sea water, it causes a decrease in the quality of road pavements, in this case, rigid pavements. This study aims to determine the effect of exposure to sea water on fc' 36 MPa quality concrete in laboratory samples and to compare it with concrete from the Bengkalis Ring Road field coredrill which has been exposed to sea water for 5 years, as well as to know the results of observations using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) method. This research was conducted at three locations, namely the Bengkalis Ring Road for core concrete samples, the Technical Division Laboratory of PT. Lutvindo Wijaya Perkasa for laboratory concrete samples, and the Bandung Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Laboratory for SEM observation samples. The research was carried out by soaking laboratory samples after setting in plain water and seawater, and tested at 7, 14, 28, and 56 days of immersion. Then compare the compressive strength of concrete exposed to seawater 56 days with the compressive strength of concrete exposed to seawater 5 years. Furthermore, observations were made with an electron microscope to observe the development of ettringite due to the reaction between cement and seawater. From this study it was found that in laboratory concrete samples exposed to sea water, the compressive strength at immersion age of 7.14 and 28 days continued to increase, namely 29.54 MPa, 39.16 MPa and 40.18 MPa. However, there was a decrease in compressive strength at 56 days of immersion age of 2.08 MPa or to 38.10 MPa. Comparison of concrete exposed to seawater for 56 days and 5 years, concrete exposed to 56 days experienced a decrease in concrete compressive strength of 4.75% of the design compressive strength, while concrete exposed to seawater decreased in compressive strength of 39.78% due to exposure for 5 year. In observations with SEM, ettringite was clearly visible in concrete that had been exposed to seawater for a longer time, namely in samples of field core concrete observations.
