Abstract

The use of recycled materials in road infrastructure development is a strategic step to support the realization of sustainable development. One of the materials with great potential is crumb rubber, which is derived from waste tires and utilized as a modifier in asphalt mixtures. This study aims to examine the optimum asphalt content (OAC) and the Marshall characteristics of asphalt mixtures modified with crumb rubber, through a literature review of various previous studies. The method employed is a literature review with a qualitative-descriptive approach. The Marshall parameters analyzed include stability, flow, voids in the mixture (VIM), voids in mineral aggregate (VMA), voids filled with bitumen (VFB), and the Marshall Quotient (MQ). The findings indicate that the average OAC (Optimum Asphalt Content) from previous studies was 6.04%, while this study obtained an OAC of 5.7%. For the Marshall characteristics with crumb rubber modified asphalt, the average values in previous research were VIM 5.28%, VMA 17.51%, VFB 71.15%, stability 1415.2 kg, flow 3.36 mm, MQ 431.51 kg/mm, and crumb rubber content of 8.65%. In contrast, this study produced values of VIM 4.08%, VMA 18.06%, VFA 77.38%, stability 1153 kg, flow 3.5 mm, MQ 329.43 kg/mm, and crumb rubber content of 5,9%. These results demonstrate that the use of crumb rubber, whether 8.65% as in previous studies or 4% as in this study, remains effective and has the potential to improve the performance of environmentally friendly pavement.
