Abstract

This study aims to analyze horror as a myth within cultural commodification through a case study of the film *“Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion.”* This research uses a qualitative approach with Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis method to identify signs and mythical meanings of horror constructed in the film. Data were collected through in-depth observation of key scenes, documentation, and literature review. The findings show that “Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion” presents horror not merely as entertainment but as a representation of myths rooted in Indonesian cultural values. Horror elements such as ghosts, wandering spirits, and rituals are transformed into cultural symbols and subsequently commodified through film media. This commodification turns horror myths into cultural products consumable by the masses, while simultaneously reinforcing local cultural identity amid globalization. The film utilizes the power of myth to captivate audiences both nationally and internationally without losing its distinct Indonesian character. This study also finds that the commodification of horror in film contributes to both the preservation and transformation of cultural values, where old myths are adapted into modern contexts through popular media. In conclusion, horror as myth in film plays a dual role: as a reinforcement of cultural identity and as a commodity. This study recommends that filmmakers and creative industry players be more critical when incorporating local cultural elements, so they serve not only as commodities but also as tools for education and cultural preservation.
