Abstract
his study aims to find out how cultural identity is carried out through social media by international students of the Islamic University of Riau. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection methods in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation to obtain relevant results. The informants in this study are international students of the Islamic University of Riau who are active in using social media. Based on Stella Ting Toomey's theoretical concept, there are five dimensions, namely, Cultural Identity, Self-Representation, Sociocultural Adaptation, Identity Security and Validation, and Identity Negotiation Strategies. The results of the study show that international students at the Islamic University of Riau actively maintain and negotiate their cultural identity through social media, especially Instagram. Their cultural identity is not lost in the process of adaptation, but rather strengthened, adapted, and celebrated. Social media is used as a space for self-expression, learning local culture, social communication, and a means of maintaining connections with the culture of origin. This adaptation process takes place dynamically and positively because it is supported by an inclusive campus environment and individual openness in interacting across cultures.
