Abstract

In the digital era, social media is crucial for human interaction. Facebook, as a dominant platform in Indonesia, is no longer merely a personal entertainment medium. Its role has transformed significantly, especially in Seberida District, Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau. This strategically located region, with its strong economic activities in plantations, trade, and mining, serves as an ideal site to understand the shifting functions of Facebook within its community. Initially, Facebook was primarily used for updates and personal entertainment. However, over time, it has become a multifunctional platform impacting various aspects of life. This study aims to deeply describe the transformation of Facebook utilization among the people of Seberida District over time. To uncover this phenomenon, we employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of this study are active Facebook users from various generations (X, Millennials, Z) in Seberida District. The object of the research focuses on the forms of social media utilization transformation itself. Data collection techniques involved indepth interviews with key informants, direct observation of informants' Facebook posts, and document studies. Data validity was ensured through triangulation techniques, specifically technical triangulation, by comparing findings from various methods. The research results indicate that interpersonal communication on Facebook has undergone a crucial functional shift. Facebook has transformed into a multifunctional platform facilitating social aspects such as community strengthening and information dissemination; economic aspects like promotion and product sales; cultural aspects including tradition preservation and religious content; and political aspects like literacy and public participation. This combination of uses is essential in building connections, supporting economic activities, and strengthening the identity and engagement of the Seberida community in various facets of life.
