Abstract
This study aims to determine how the phenomenon of face-to-face communication shifts to digital communication among adolescents in Air Putih Village. The background of this study is based on the phenomenon of increasing smartphone use among adolescents, which causes a shift from face-to-face communication to textbased communication, social media, and messaging applications. The advancement of digital technology today has the ability to influence every aspect of human life, especially in terms of technology and information. The familiar term "digital era" is used for digital developments, especially internet networks and information technology. This shift has an impact on the decline in the intensity of direct interpersonal communication, a reduced sense of togetherness, and changes in behavior in social interactions. In addition, adolescents now when meeting in person are no longer identical to talking to each other but are busy with their respective smartphones. The study was conducted with a qualitative descriptive approach with a phenomenological approach, using observations and interviews with adolescent smartphone users in Air Putih Village. The results of this study indicate that although smartphones have changed the way people interact, especially among adolescents, togetherness and face-to-face communication cannot be completely replaced by technology. It can be concluded that the phenomenon of face-to-face communication to digital communication among adolescent smartphone users in Air Putih Village. The advent of technology hasn't eliminated traditional communication values, but rather added a variety of communication methods tailored to individual situations, needs, and desires. Therefore, digital education is necessary for all teenagers, including those who tend to be more comfortable communicating via smartphones.
