Abstract

Monuments, as cultural symbols, play an important role in conveying the values and identity of a society. In Tanjungbatu Kundur City, the Clock Monument has long served as a regional icon. However, the lack of information regarding the meanings of the embedded symbols makes it difficult for the community to fully understand its significance. This study aims to uncover the representation of Malay cultural symbols found on the Tanjungbatu Kundur Clock Monument using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. Barthes’ semiotic model offers an analytical framework divided into three levels of meaning: denotation (literal meaning), connotation (cultural meaning), and myth (ideological meaning). This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The subject of the study is the Clock Monument itself, while the object is the Malay symbols represented through visual elements such as the pyramid-shaped roof, pucuk rebung ornaments, and hanging bees. The results of the research show that each of these elements has a meaning that represents Malay customs, where the pyramid roof is used to represent the Malay people's way of life, namely simple and religious, then bamboo shoots symbolize hope and growth, while begayut bees reflect cooperation, togetherness and the spirit of mutual cooperation. These meanings are not only about visual beauty, but also represent the ideology and values of Malay culture that have been passed down from generation to generation by the people of Tanjungbatu. Thus, it can be concluded that the representation of Malay symbols used on the Tanjungbatu Kundur Clock Monument is a pyramid roof, bamboo shoot carvings and begayut bee ornaments, each of which has a deep meaning that reflects the life of the Malay community in the city of Tanjungbatu Kundur.
