Abstract
This research aims to identify the meaning contained in the ritual of Pencak Silat Pangean performed during wedding ceremonies in Pangkalan Tampoi Village, Kerumutan Subdistrict, Pelalawan Regency. Pencak Silat Pangean is not only a martial art, but also a traditional ritual that holds symbolic and spiritual values within the local Malay culture. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method and applies Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory, which distinguishes between the signifier and the signified. The findings reveal that there are nine ritual stages in the Silat Pangean performance: bekobe (notification), mandi belimau (lime bath), wudhu (ablution), wearing traditional clothing, reciting prayers or mantras, the tepung tawar ritual, arrangement of dubalang (silat representatives), giving respect to elders and masters, and a collective prayer before the performance begins. Each stage holds symbolic meaning, reflecting values such as respect, purity, spiritual readiness, and the integration of tradition with religion. This research concludes that Silat Pangean is not merely a performance, but a sacred cultural ritual that expresses the spiritual and cultural identity of the Malay community in Riau.
